Water, water everywhere... I suppose it's a sad fact of being: we can't have everything. There are too many great books to read, too many places to experience, too many possibilities to choose them all, much too much! And unfortunately or fortunately, however you wish to see the glass, there's too much for US to drink and know, this includes vino. Difficult to fathom, I realize, but 'tis true. Very depressing and all that. Don't misunderstand me, we've had a nice barrel or two, red in particular, but we haven't gone out of our way to know why its good or why its horrible, and frankly, not only is our knowledge lacking, so is the contents of our pocket book; we're aiming for CHEAP and GOOD; CHEAP being chief. Be happy if you read of an expensive wine, for Fortune must have, breifly, smiled upon us. So, connoisseurs we are not, but taste buds we do have, and you shall certainly benefit from our creativity in search of the dirt cheap! If you're like us, here's an interesting link about wine's ancient origins; you'll also see why I love anthropologists: Never thirst!

Gato Negro

Price

$9.70/bottle (w/ tax)

Bought at

Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation (Halifax)

Had it with

steaks

This affordable, yet tasty red wine has a faint buttery smell from a distance, which becomes sweet and fruity as one comes closer. However, there is little sweetness in the taste, counter-balanced, perhaps, by the relatively forward dryness and the tanins. It finishes nicely with a pepery nose, which is especially pleasant when accompanied with grilled meat. Excellent, especially for the price, but one should be careful not to match it with too delicate a meal, or the wine will drown it out.
