A Beverage-based Blog

Hi, this is a blog I put together quickly so that my girlfriend and I could post our thoughts on some of the things we drink. Right now, this is heavily centred around alcoholic beverages, but it might some day even encompass other beverages we enjoy, such as tea and coffee. Of course, the opinions expressed here are our own and may very significantly differ from yours (it's all a matter of taste, isn't it?), but, whether you agree or disagree with us, I hope it will be useful in some way, if only to introduce you to drinks or brands you didn't know existed. If you should have any comment on what you read here, please feel free to drop me a note at smassy at sdf dot lonestar dot org.

For context's sake, know that we are currently living in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where we arrived from Montreal in August 2005; hence, when we refer to something as local, it more or less means NS or, at its broadest, the Atlantic provinces. It also means that all prices reported here are in Canadian currency, unless otherwise specified. Price are also non-inclusive of taxes (15% in Canada), once again, unless otherwise specified. But that's boring stuff…

San Miguel 5 Year

Price

$20.08/750ML

Bought at

Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation (Halifax)

We bought this rum just before the beginning of the Christmas holidays for mixing in drink and food, but it was also an opportunity to try something different, minus the usual expectations; if it wasn't the best thing in the world, no problem--we'll just drown a bowl of fruit and enjoy it that way--happy holidays. Sometimes we need a break from the serious world of tasting, to let go and await fullness of it; I've often found more than I might in the usual circumstances when tasting a spirit in this way--more in either taste or overall experience. San Miguel, imported from Ecuador, is light in texture and color; a clear, beautiful golden wheat, and medium body, filled with a rainbow of easily recognizable, but never overpowering, aromas and flavors. The smell is made up of mostly vanilla and sugar; this combined with the taste of cinnamon, tropical fruits, dessert spices (such as cinnamon and perhaps something akin to cloves) and more vanilla, makes me think of the concoction I like to mix for French toast--I love French toast. I think you can see from my tasting notes, this is another higly drinkable rum, but you can drink it two ways: savor it or have it like wine, the choice is up to your mood, as the characterstics of this rum lend themselves to either occasion, in addition to the affordable price-tag. There is a seven year old version of this rum which I'd love to try, for only a few dollars more; my guess is the flavors will harmonize, making it a more refined rum--perhaps French toast versus a souffle. We'll see!
