A Beverage-based Blog

Hi, this is a blog I put together quickly so that my girlfriend and I could post our thoughts on some of the things we drink. Right now, this is heavily centred around alcoholic beverages, but it might some day even encompass other beverages we enjoy, such as tea and coffee. Of course, the opinions expressed here are our own and may very significantly differ from yours (it's all a matter of taste, isn't it?), but, whether you agree or disagree with us, I hope it will be useful in some way, if only to introduce you to drinks or brands you didn't know existed. If you should have any comment on what you read here, please feel free to drop me a note at smassy at sdf dot lonestar dot org.

For context's sake, know that we are currently living in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where we arrived from Montreal in August 2005; hence, when we refer to something as local, it more or less means NS or, at its broadest, the Atlantic provinces. It also means that all prices reported here are in Canadian currency, unless otherwise specified. Price are also non-inclusive of taxes (15% in Canada), once again, unless otherwise specified. But that's boring stuff…

Powers Gold Label Irish Whiskey

Price

$25.75/750ML

Bought at

Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation (Halifax)

I don't know much about this Whisky, except it was out there with the more affordable Irish, such as Jameson and Paddy. It smells very much like Irish Whisky, but the smell is heavily layered with very ripe bananas. The tastes begins very lemony, making one pucker one's lips slightly, and then becomes richer, being reminiscent of taffy, which, with the oak, yields a very interesting effect, to say the least. The end is, perhaps, where it tastes most like your typical Irish Whisky, though the aftertaste, and especially the nose, retain some musky overtones. This is really the earthier, darker side of Irish whiskies, which often tend to be on the light and fruity side. Probably good if you want to taste a different Irish Whisky at a reasonable price: not crazy about it, but I like it okay…

Jost 2004 Habitant Blanc

Price

$10.88/750ML (taxes included)

Bought at

Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation (Halifax)

Had it with

roast chicken

This is a very interesting white wine with a heavy smell and fortunately lighter taste of fish, or sea, at the very least. However, it has much more to offer, beginning with a slight pineapple taste which blossoms into a rather stringent grapefruit taste before subsiding to a lightly honeyed aftertaste. The slight fizziness in the mouth makes this wine refreshing and extremely easy-drinking. Probably not ideal with heavy meats or spicy dishes, but I would definitely recommend it for lighter courses or even as an aperitif wine, as it's certainly light enough to justify that.
