Hi, this is a blog I put together quickly so that my girlfriend and I could post our thoughts on some of the things we drink. Right now, this is heavily centred around alcoholic beverages, but it might some day even encompass other beverages we enjoy, such as tea and coffee. Of course, the opinions expressed here are our own and may very significantly differ from yours (it's all a matter of taste, isn't it?), but, whether you agree or disagree with us, I hope it will be useful in some way, if only to introduce you to drinks or brands you didn't know existed. If you should have any comment on what you read here, please feel free to drop me a note at smassy at sdf dot lonestar dot org. For context's sake, know that we are currently living in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where we arrived from Montreal in August 2005; hence, when we refer to something as local, it more or less means NS or, at its broadest, the Atlantic provinces. It also means that all prices reported here are in Canadian currency, unless otherwise specified. Price are also non-inclusive of taxes (15% in Canada), once again, unless otherwise specified. But that's boring stuff… Click on any category or subcategory to read entries more relevant to your interests and tastes. Happy drinking! Sunday, October 23 2005
We had heard about and seen this vodka for a long time, and had had many a laugh at it: after all, French vodka sounds like an unlikely thing, and the price is quite high. A few days ago, we saw a tiny taster on display and decided that a few dollars was a reasonable price to find out what this Goose was all about. We looked at the bottle very carefully, and there is no mention of citrus anywhere, so it does not appeared to have been flavoured, yet it certainly tasted like lemon to me: so bear in mind that I might be reviewing their lemon-flavoured product, instead of their basic vodka. It's nice and clean with a light body and a very crisp ending. The taste, as I said, is mostly of citrus, but you can also taste the grain rather better than expected for such a light vodka. Over all, very easy-drinking with hardly any burn, rather nice, in fact. So, is it a good vodka? Yes, unquestionably better than many. Is it worth the price tag? No, not as far as I'm concerned. Nor, as a matter of fact, does it deserve the hysterical reviews it seems to be getting everywhere on the internet. Your results may varry; but if you use some cheap rye whisky-- we used some of that Seagrams which comes in cute little plastic flasks-- you'll find that the oaken taste of the whisky simply blends and compounds that of the chocolate. Probably a great way to get Auntie Jane drunk without it ever coming to her knowledge. Enjoy! [/Miscellaneous/Recipes] permanent link
Wild Rose brewery has been an exciting find for us, bringing us top-notch experiences from Alberta. Last night's weekend special was their IPA, starting off with a lovely head of foam, followed by aromas ranging from spices to berries to a suspected fragrance of jasmine. The body was medium; enough to allow for easy drinking but with enough substance to leave one satisfied. It had flavors of berry juice and cider, which were balanced with hops making it a refreshing ale and a great compliment to our fragrant, heavily garliced and spiced indian meal. This was followed by a nose of more spices, such a cloves. After these experiences, I think perhaps heaven comes in only a few sizes, and the litre, shared with a close friend, is one of them. The ceramic stopper, which allows one to re-seal the bottle, if not sharing, also adds a distinctive touch to the bottle, as well as offering a great alternative to corks and metal caps (Makes it re-usable too!).
